Academy signs pact with hotels

AS THE Government aims to make Langkawi a top tourist destination, a sizable and qualified workforce will be needed to cater to this goal.
In this regard, the Langkawi Tourism Academy recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with 17 hotels in Langkawi to help produce fit-for-industry graduates.
The MoU formalised the hotels’ prior agreement with the academy to provide internship opportunities for its students.
One of the participating hotels is The Datai, Langkawi, whose general manager Anthony Sebastian said the project would address the shortage of local talents.

Saying thanks: Mohamed Khaled (front row, centre) receiving a token of appreciation from Prof Hassan, after witnessing the signing of the MoU. Looking on (next to Mohd Khaled) is Ab Rahim.
“I laud this initiative as it is a way to entice locals to remain within the island,” he said, adding that only 70% of the hotel’s workforce was made up of locals.
Previously known as Kolej Komuniti Langkawi, the academy was rebranded in an upgrading exercise carried out last year by the Higher Education Ministry and Taylor’s University.
The setting up of the academy is one of the 14 initiatives laid out in the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint 2011-2015, which maps out a plan to make the island a “global top 10 island and eco destination by 2015”.
Speaking at the event, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the ministry had appointed Taylor’s University in 2011 to act as project consultant to establish the academy.. more below

Tour de Langkawi: Theo Bos goes long but holds on to take stage two

Theo Bos (Blanco) took his second victory in as many days in the 2013 Tour de Langkawi as he outsprinted the peloton at the finish of stage two between Serdang and Kuala Kangsar. The margin of victory for the former track World champion was considerably less than on the previous day, however, as he opened up his sprint far too early, but managed to hold on to beat record Langkawi stage winner Andrea Guardini (Astana) in a close finish.

Having missed out on the top ten the previous day, Lithuanian Aidis Kruopis (Orica-GreenEdge) managed to outsprint Frenchman Bryan Coquard (Europcar) and Briton Andy Fenn (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) for the final spot on the podium...

Monsalve confident he can win the LTdL overall title again

..Returning with a new team for Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) this year, 2011 winner Yonnatha Monsalve believes he can emerge as the overall winner again.
The Venezuelan will be the sole hopeful for his team Vini Fantini to win the overall classification title as he has taken the role of team leader in the race.
Monsalve had to resort to being just a lieutenant to Jose Serpa in the Androni Giocattoli team when Serpa won his second overall title in LTdL. But Monsalve penned a move to Vini Fantini on a two-year contract in October last year to aim for a bigger role...

Nami Island Korea Cultural Month | Korea Tourism Organization

The Langkawi Naminara Cultural Festival 2012, a joint program of Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and Nami Island Inc., was officially launched by LADA CEO Tan Sri Khalid Ramli and CEO of Nami Island Inc. Kang Woo-Hyun, at Oriental Village, Langkawi on 1 December 2012. The first event under a LADA-Nami Inc. friendship initiative that kicked-off in May this year showcases Korea’s culture and beauty specifically that of Nami Island.

That casual conversation lead to this smart partnership, which we foresee can further promote both islands to the Korean and Malaysian tourism market. Promotion of Langkawi Island in Nami Island was held in August and now it's time for promoting Nami Island here. This program will begin on 30 November until 30 December 2012 in Oriental Village, Langkawi

“However, we believe we can achieve the three million arrivals this year as I was told we are close to the number.
“We also hope to reach RM3.8bil in tourist receipts by 2015,” he said at the island yesterday.
In realising the tourism potential of the island, Najib said the Government had decided to fur- ther strengthen this by adopting 14 new “aggressive but realistic” initiatives.
“After the launch of the blueprint last year, we noticed an 11.9% increase in arrivals, the highest recorded since 2000. This has brought the occupancy rate of hotels up by 8.7%.
“Other projects suggested by the private sector are estimated to be at RM7.6bil,” he said.
He added that the island was a familiar destination for local and foreign tourists, with its 550 million-year-old old rock formations and 99 islands forming the Asean region's first Geo-park.
