Malaysia's First Submarine is Now in the Strait of Malacca

Shirley, 3 September 2009 / Source: Bernama

Guess what is coming our way?
"KD Tunku Abdul Rahman" (KD TAR), Malaysia's first Scorpene submarine is now in the Malacca Strait and sailing towards Port Klang for the official welcoming ceremony today.

Scorpene is a conventional combat submarine, equipped with six torpedo tubes where guided missiles can be launched simultaneously. It can reach a speed up to 20 knots, has anti-aircraft missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes. It can submerge to a depth of up to 200m.
In 2002, two Scorpene-class submarines were purchased by Malaysia at the cost of RM3.4 billion. They were jointly designed and built by the French firm DCNS and Spain's Navantia. Both submarines are named after the country's first and second prime ministers.
The KD TAR is captained by Commander Zulhelmy Ithnain and along with him are 35 crew. The submarine will be displayed at the Langkawi International Maritime And Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA '09) on 1-5 December.

"KD Tun Razak", the country's second submarine will be commissioned in October 2009 and is expected to head home in January 2010 and to reach Malaysia two months later.

Urgent Blood Donation Drive On August 15 - Langkawi Fair Complex

Volunteers from ANSARA ,the alumni of prestigious science college Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) , are running their annual nation-wide , pre-Ramadan blood donation drive on Saturday August 15th at Langkawi Fair .

They need as many people as possible to donate as there is a severe blood shortage during Ramadan ( due to Muslims being unable to donate blood while fasting ) . The problem og blood shortage during Ramadan in Malaysia is compounded by the fact that accident rates shoot up during the "balik kampung" season before Hari Raya .Donated blood as shelflife of 42 days , so it is crucial that as much blood as possible is collected before Ramadan begins .

Golf at Langkawi Island

Datai Bay Golf Course

Nestled between the northern foothills of Gunung Machincang and Datai Bay, the 6,000m long course is made up of fairways of Bermuda grass and greens of tifdwarf grass. The course undulates in all directions and a lost ball is probably….lost. You will see monkeys in the trees and hornbills in the air so it’s a bit of an eco experience as well. It is a 30-minute taxi ride from Pantai Cenang to the course. Uniquely, this course has a 19th hole that is not a bar! To finish you will need to clear 160m stretch over the sea, a rocky shore and a bunker. The club house is well serviced with a pro shop, restaurant and full buggy facility.

Datai Bay Golf Club sales@dataigolf.com

Gunung Raya Golf Course
As the name suggests, the club lies in the foothills of Mount Raya. It is the most popular course on the island, being less expensive than the Datai and easier to play. The 6,377m course is turf with Zoysia Matrella grass ending with superb greens of Tifdwarf Bermuda. You will see an abundance of wildlife on your way around this stunning setting of mountains and mangroves. The first nine holes are deceptively forgiving lulling you into a false sense of security before you reach the 13th, 14th and 15th where the trees, lakes and bunkers are ball magnets. Facilities include an open driving range and pro shop, club house, café and changing rooms. Buggies are essential and these are plentiful.

99 Degrees East Golf Course
Langkawi may soon host international golf events with the development of two 18 whole world class golf courses. The plan is a part of a RM2.8 Billion township, resorts and golf club located in Ulu Melaka near Kuah. The first nine holes should be playable by June 2009 and the following 9 holes by January 2010.
