Langkawi Museum on the Hill – Ibrahim Hussien’s gift to Art and Life

At the hilltop overlooking Pantai Pasir Tengkorak (beach of skull)Langkawi island ,the startling postmodern architecture of the Ibrahim Hussien Museum and Cultural Foundation emerges from the dense jungle like an alien spaceship .A shocking sight for anyone to see here in rural Langkawi .
The building is a gallery for the mesmerizing abstract paintings and sculpture of Ibrahim Hussien,one of Malaysia’s most famous artists .

The museum itself is a work of modern art, with is bare concrete floor, randomly angled walls and the slits of light coming through tall windows, etching the floor like laser beams-a perfect setting for Ibrahim’s enormous canvases,from the eye –popping abstract paintings to his grim collages if political turmoil and injustice .

Welcome to Langkawi island and see this museum at the Pantai Pasir Tengkorak ,Datai Road Langkawi island .

Dr.Ghani with Langkawi Herb Walk
Remember that ..?
Let Dr. Ghani take you on a fascinating tour of medicinal plants in Langkawi’s rainforest ,mangrove jungles and his own organic herb gardern.Discover the depth and richness of traditional Malay healing and medicine .
1.Garden Herbwalk ( 2 hrs )
The Garden Herbwalk is a 2 hrs program program that consists of an introductory lecture and then a guided tour through Dr.Ghani’s garden,where he cultivates around 500 species of medicinal plants.It end with drinks and snacks under the balai,after with you will be presented with a charming bookmark with a tiny plant laminated inside (hand-assembled by Dr.Ghani and Dayang).
2.Rainforest Herbwalk ( 4hrs )
The Rainforest Herbwalk runs from 10am to 2pm and involves a 3hrs hike through a specially prepared trail in the Gunung Raya rainforest .The walk ends at the balai with a home-made lunch prepared by Dayang .Coming along are 2 other expert forest guide Paklong Bashah,reputedly the foremost expert on plants in Langkawi ,and Abang Non Kuda,a guide known for being able to track animals in the dark with his legendary sense of sight and smell .
3.Mangrove Cruise ( 4hrs )
The last programme is not a walk but a 3 hrs boat cruise through the mangrove swamp ,again with running commentary by Pak Long Bashah and Dr.Ghani .The last hour of the programme is lunch at the balai .
The doctor would like everyone to know that he is not currently in the business of treating patients with traditional Malay herbs and tonic .The Herbwalk is purely educational ,meant only as an introduction to the surprisingly sophiscated Malay healing traditional ,and to promote the incredible botanical diversity of the island that we live on . Dr Ghani
Website about Traditional Medicine At Langkawi Island

Remember my blog about Herbwalk with Dr Ghani ?
Langkawi Herbwalk With Dr. Ghani

Traditional Malay Medicine is amongst the oldest form of healing art which encompasses the use of plants , minerals and animal products as medicine . Malaysia is fortunate in that she has amongst the world’s most diversified biological products that are readily available to be used as medicine . Langkawi is no different in this sense with resources within the rainforest and mangrove swamp that has been used as medicine to treat common ailments for generations .
Dr. Ghani is a qualified Medical Practitioner who has been practicing his western style of medicine on this island for the past 22 years . During this time he has been successful in promoting modern medicine to the villagers to the advantage of those who came after him . After 22 years he has been forced into looking at the values of plant as medicine after being married to his petite wife who seems to be allergic to most of the medicine he has in his clinic .It was never a frustrating thing because he found the plant that did wonders ti his dear wife in the form of the weed which grows in abundance here in Langkawi . This started him into venturing deeper in the use of plants as medicine .
To bring the tourists into the realms of the Traditional Malay Art of Healing, Dr Ghani has the three program outlined ;

1.Herb-Walk in My Garden
2.Herb-Walk in the Rainforest
3.Ethnobotanical Tour of the Mangrove

Wonder of the 'Wetland' Of LangkawiThe Mangrove Swamp
The eco-system that exist in this strange mangrove forest is one of the existing wonders of this planet and while here in Langkawi this definitely is 'must' place to visit.The water here very in salinity and whatever vegetation that thrives here must have a strong tolerance towards high and low salt content .The mangrove tree is a highly evolved .To overcome drowned root system with no aeration during high tide ,they have involved ariel roots.The high salt content do not affect them because they are about the only tree that is capable to reverse osmosis - hence they actually produce their own fresh water from the seawater.Another unique feature of this wonder tree ia that they are able to control evaporation from their leaves by an ability to 'move'their leaves away from the sun .They are also able to close their pores
Interesting Inhabitant Of The Mangrove Swamp
* The Fiddler Crab
* The Mudskipper
* The Mud Lobster
* The Mangrove Snake
* The Malayan Clouded Leapord
* The Hairy-Nosed
OtterMangrove Tour - Activities

2. Floating Fish Farm
3. Exploring Bat Cave
4. Pack lunch

What Is The Mangrove Swamp All About ?
Since the Langkawi Declaration on Environment in 1989 ,at the Commonwealth Head Of Goverment at Langkawi ,Langkawi has made serious inroads towards the preservation of the wetlands of the island .The wetland here are basically mangrove swamps .Langkawi has more than 8000 hectares of pure and pristine virgin mangrove forest .Mangrove forest basically are lowlying forest forest that grow in river estuaries ,bays and delta's ,where the water level varies between the low levelat low tide and the high level at hide tide .At one time it was thought that these swampy forests were nothing more than unwanted wastelands.Now ,however there is more awereness as to its impotance and the need to its further preservation .This is so because they contribute tremendouly towards the life of this planet !

Langkawi Island - The Legendary Of Mahsuri
The story of Mahsuri is more real and dramatic .She was the daugther of Pandak Mayah, a poor peasant who hailed from Thailand .A series of strange events occuarred when Pandak Mayah entered Langkawi and he son soon became very rich and famous selling birds nest .Soon after Mahsuri was born.As she grew up she blossomed into a young lady of exqisite beauty .Everybody on the island adored her except Wan Mahora (The wife of the chieften - Dato Seri Kerma Jaya ),who grew more and more envious of her .She was married off to a handsome young man call Wan Derus . Wan Derus and Mahsuri had a child an d were very happy and content .One day ,when Wan Derus had to go to Southern Thailand (Siam) for trade ,a poor wandering minstrel called Deraman came to the village.The benevolent Mahsuri took pity and befreinded him .Deraman out of gratitude composed many poems praising her.It was then that evil Mahora took advantage of the situation and plotted a plan to rid her of Mahsuri .A report was lodged with Dato Seri Kerma Jaya ,that Mahsuri had purportedly committed adultery with Deraman .He immediately arrested her .Her plea of innocence was completely ignored ,and she was sentenced to death .The executioner was very suprised when his keris (Malay dagger) ,could not panetrate her flesh .After many attempts ,Mahsuri said "if you have somade up your mind to take my life despite my innocence,so be it",and pointed to a 'sacred keris' that would do the job .When the keris was plunged into her,white blood spurted out .It is believed that this was assign from heaven of her innocence and purity .With her dying breath,she laid a curse upon Langkawi ,that is would not prosper for seven generations.Soon after ,Langkawi was attacked by the Siamese .Dato Seri Kerma Jaya was mercilessly slaughtered .Drought prevailed and Langkawi was soon a barren land .It is trought that this curse was lifted on the birth of
Wan Aishah(Mahsuri's eighth generation descendent),in 1985 .The fact is that Langkawi started developing around 1985 ,as a tourist destination ,to become what it is now.Coincidence or not ,the developing of Langkawi ,does fit in with the lifting of the curse !.Mahsuri's body was laid to rest ,at a place now called MAKAM MAHSURI (Mahsuri's Mausoleum).

She is now treated with reverence and her resting place is considered a shrine to some .
